sleepy time essentials
it’s no secret that for the past two years sleep has always been a touchy subject in this home. but for real, our little Wilder has never been a naturally good sleeper. in fact, it wasn’t until recently (around 20 months old!) that he finally started sleeping through the night consistently.
MY THEORY —
50% of this most likely has to do with the fact that he’s getting older and understands how to sleep in longer stretches, but i’m also convinced that the other half has to do with some changes we’ve implemented since the beginning of the year.
so… for any other struggling parents out there, i feel ya, and i want to help! not that these tips will guarantee you better sleep, but maybe they can encourage you to think outside the box & just keep keeping on!
TIPS & TRICKS
you’ve heard it before and i’m here to tell you again: stick to a routine. some babies are super laid-back and can just go with the flow from day one, but then there are other babes (mine included!) that desperately crave routine in order to thrive. if your babe seems to be in this category, don’t fight it. this means, for your own sanity, i encourage you to stick to a consistent sleep schedule. aka — same nap & bedtime schedule every day.
SET THE MOOD —
this is something that i desperately wish i would’ve known earlier on in Wilder’s little life, but over the past year, i’ve learned that transforming his room into a bit of an oasis has drastically helped him sleep better! we don’t use black out curtains, but we do have wooden blinds that block out most of the light on a sunny day and in the summer months when it stays light out way past his bedtime :) we also use this starlight projector & noise machine. it may seem like a lot to some people, but all of these elements help to set a dreamy atmosphere, which helps so much when you have a little monster who hates sleep ;)
OILY TOOLKIT —
i wish i could shout it from the rooftop of a skyscraper, but essential oils have saved us in the sleep department! our oily bedtime routine looks like this:
+ Kidscents bath gel & Lavender bath bombs in the tub
+ massage Seedlings baby lotion all over his little body
+ our favorite sleepy roller on his chest & then jammies on
+ Sleepyize & Gentle Baby in the diffuser to fill his room with the dreamiest scent
all these tools help to create whimsy & lull my little man into a deep peaceful sleep. if you are struggling with sleep, i highly encourage you to grab a starter kit and join my oily tribe! i assure you will NOT be sorry!
LOTS OF PATIENCE (and coffee) —
here’s the thing mama, you may sleep train at six months and never have to worry about it again. OR your story might look a little more like mine and you may not experience a straight eight hours of blissful sleep until your kiddo nears the two year mark. either way, try to find patience when you’re in the thick of it. and don’t forget that soon they’ll ask you to lay them in their crib wide awake so they can drift off to sweet slumber by themselves and you’ll be left wondering where your little baby went…
Motherhood is never easy, we all know this, but you will sleep again soon. so soak up those cuddles & chug that coffee, mama :)
